anzac service

Each year, on the Sunday before Anzac Day (April 25th), St Thomas' holds a special Anzac Service in remembrance and gratitude for the sacrifice of the servicemen who fought for our freedoms while serving in the armed forces.

St Thomas' welcomes members and veterans of the 2/17th Battalion who lay wreaths at the Pozieres' Cross to acknowledge and honour their comrades who fell in combat.

The next Anzac Service will be held
at 10am on Sunday 22nd April 2012.

remembrance sunday

Remembrance Day (or Armistice Day) is observed each year on November 11th. (The eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month was the time – in Britain and France – when the armistice of World War I became effective in 1918.) Remembrance Day is dedicated to the memory of members of the armed forces who were killed during war.

Remembrance PoppiesAlthough two minutes' silence is usually observed on November 11th itself, the main observance is usually held on the Sunday before, and historically St Thomas' has held a Remembrance Sunday service on this day each year. As on Anzac Day, members and veterans of the 2/17th Battalion attend this service and wreaths are laid at the Pozieres' Cross.

However, please note that there will be no Remembrance Service at St Thomas' in 2011.

The Pozieres' Cross

The Pozieres' Cross

The wooden cross on the northern wall of St Thomas' church was erected in France in 1916 when many Australians lost their lives during the First World War. The cross was brought here in 1932 when St Thomas' became the home church of the 17th Battalions.
