What Would Jesus Do?

W.W.J.D.

Are you familiar with these four letters?

There was a time when many Christian Youth were seen with bracelets with these letters. It was a major phenomenon. Why? The letters stand for What Would Jesus Do? This simple question was embraced as a profound way for even the “youngest” Christian to determine how to live for Jesus in everyday life. In any context – What Would Jesus Do here? Would he be patient or pushy, critical or forgiving, honest or deceptive, kind or rough? The idea is quite simple and yet profound!

Let me ask you what you think Jesus would do in these circumstances:
– someone is sitting alone in church when he arrived – WWJD?
– the Bible reading is announced and the reader stands – WWJD?
– a faithful minister begins to teach the truth – WWJD?
– people are invited to bow to pray with the leader – WWJD?
– as the service concludes he see someone else alone – WWJD?

Surely he would listen with delight to the holy scriptures – his Father’s Word. Surely he would bow his head in genuine reverence as he speaks with his brothers and sisters to his Father in prayer. Surely he would love his brothers and sisters (as he has commanded us to do) by the way he speaks to, welcomes and comforts those around him.

Over the last three weeks we looked at what we called “Ministry Of The Pew”. We considered what each of us can do as we arrive at church, during church and after church. If you can’t remember any of it that is a real pity!!! But WWJD should help.

So can I ask you one more time? What would Jesus do today here at church? Further, can I ask you as church begins, will you be like Jesus in all you do and say for the next couple of hours? Plan now – to listen, love, learn, and lead by example. Look around and see people before and after church.

Friends, if we can’t translate our faith into action in church, then what kind of faith is it we have, after all is said and done? Jesus said, “They will know you are my disciples by your love for one another.” If it’s not obvious when we meet – then perhaps we need to check if we really are his disciples.

Wishing you a closer walk with Jesus today,

Your brother in Christ,

Richard James
The Wedding Minister

P.S. Simon Manchester, our rector, will be in New Zealand from Monday to Wednesday speaking at the Christchurch Men’s Convention. Please remember to pray for him that he may be a faithful teacher of God’s Word. Pray also for his health that he may get over the cold he has had while on holidays over the past two weeks.
