St Thomas' Mission Support; New Link Missionary in Tanzania; Moore College Mission in 2011

Dear Friends,

(a) I thank God that most people in St Thomas’ know our link missionaries by name and where they are serving — surely a sign that we care. In my ‘planner’ for prayer I have one or two down for each day of the week. [Do plan your prayer life!!]

But our mission support — though small — is bigger than eight missionaries. Our mission giving sends some money to:
— Youthworks — Scripture Union
— Moore College — SMBC
— City Bible Forum (formerly ECOM)
— Trinity Bible College in Perth
— Overseas Council (supporting third world theological education)
— the Anglican Church in the Shoalhaven (for 3 years).

(b) A new missionary we have begun to support (mostly by prayer but a small amount of money goes to him as well) is Rev Joshua L—. I hope you will learn his name and include him in your prayers.

Joshua is a Maasai who grew up in Kenya and now works as a pastor-evangelist in Tanzania. He is 38, married to Anna and they have two sons, Samwel (4) and Supeet (2). Joshua is the first Maasai to graduate from the Munguishi Christian Training Centre and began a church with 7 people which now has 65. They have planted another church 20 kilometres away (that meets under a tree). He needs our prayer because the Engaruka area where he works is very large and very hot. He was walking three-hour journeys but some churches (including St Thomas’) were able to buy him a motorbike — for which he writes, “thanks be to God for your lovely heart and commitment!”

And Joshua needs our prayers because the Maasai are polytheists who often oppose Christianity quite physically.

So he asks us to pray:
— for a place for the branch church to meet in
— that God would raise up leaders
— for his travels to evanglise and pastor
— for H2O (much needed)
And he thanks us for our prayers and friendship.

You can find out more about Joshua’s ministry from Barb L— (5pm) or Russell and Kay C— (who work at St Michael’s Vaucluse).

(c) To expand on Jon’s note last week — every year Moore College sends out its students for 8-day missions to places in Sydney, Australia or beyond. We have suggested a team come to work with us at North Sydney and Northbridge and so we will welcome 15–20 students in late March 2011. The last time we had a Moore College Mission was in 1990 and the students served us very wonderfully. We value your ideas for reaching people around us who look pretty well but may be more lost than the Maasai.

Yours in fellowship,
Simon Manchester
