Origin of the Perspectives course
After the 1974 Lausanne Conference, some senior missionaries at Fuller
Theological Seminary decided to set up the Centre for World Evangelism,
and raise the average person in the home churches awareness of the need
the Christians to continue participating in making Christ known world-wide.
Thus Ralph D. Winter and others put together a thick book of articles
on various aspects of mission: Biblical, Historical, Cross-cultural and
Strategic Perspectives on the World Christian Mission. Some New Zealanders
began using the materials, and wrote a study guide to complement the materials,
and made the course more user friendly, using adult education principles.
Thus it includes DVDs, guided reading, homework and preparation for discussions.
Australians adopted both and all the Australian Evangelical missionary
societies endorse the course. It is not, however, a substitute for Bible
College, for those interested in life time missionary work, though it
is a great place to begin! Rather it continues to be a great course for
the average person in the home churches awareness of the need the Christians
to continue participating in making Christ known world-wide, as welcomers,
senders, pray-ers, and go-ers.
The course is endorsed by the Senior Minister of St Thomas', Rev Simon
Manchester
and the State Coordinators of Perspectives, Warwick and Jessica Coghlan.
